Strung along the banks of the Zambezi River in Zambia’s Lower Zambezi National Park, Old Mondoro is an intimate, unfenced bush camp of just five chalets, a pure back-to-the-bush safari from the pioneering Cumings family of Chiawa. Romantically netted king beds sit behind wide reed windows that frame the river or a hippo-filled channel, while outdoor baths double as plunge pools and open-air showers invite stargazing. Raw, remote and richly rewarding, the area delivers some of Africa’s most prolific leopard sightings, island-hopping elephant and buffalo, and extraordinary concentrations of hippo. Walking safaris, open-vehicle game drives, motorboat cruises, canoeing and catch-and-release tiger fishing complete an authentic, unedited Zambian wilderness experience.
